Liverpool in advanced talks with Trey Nyoni over new deal

Liverpool are in advanced talks with Trey Nyoni over a new contract to reflect his progress at first-team level.

The Reds have been discussing a deal with Nyoni's representatives for several months and are now believed to be close to a breakthrough.

Rising through the ranks

Liverpool opted not to pursue a replacement after Curtis Jones was sold to Inter in August, believing Nyoni was good enough to make the step up in seniority at Anfield.

The club rejected a £30m offer from Nottingham Forest late in the summer transfer window and the 19-year-old has been an important player for Andoni Iraola this season, making his full Premier League debut in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Arsenal, where he impressed before being substituted for Dominik Szoboszlai in the second half.

Nyoni's seven Premier League appearances this term is already one more than the entirety of the 25/26 campaign under Arne Slot and Iraola has been delighted with the progress of the teenager.

Manager's backing

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before Wednesday night's Champions League visit to Fenerbahce, Iraola said: "I think he has to continue in that same place he's been since the start of the pre-season, being ready for every game.

"He has played in all the games or at least all the games lately, so we trust him, he's doing very well. I think we have to encourage him to continue, you know?

"Continue improving, continue learning, continue adding experience. But he is in a very good place.

"Is he ready for the schedule? I think that young players are already ready, you know? It's just that maybe one day you have to help us for 20 minutes or start and play 65, or maybe a full game.

"He is also adding endurance because sometimes when you are young, you feel OK, you are not going to get tired but you need to add this to your body.

"It's a big step [playing] every three or four days and I think they are in the process, the young players Rio Ngumoha, Trey, Lewis Kouma, they are playing important games and minutes and I am happy with them."

Rewarding progress

Nyoni signed a new deal in June 2025 but Liverpool are keen to reward the midfielder for the progress he has made over the past 18 months.
