Subway has announced plans to open up to 70 new restaurants inside Asda supermarkets across the UK over the next four years. The expansion will increase the number of Subway franchise locations within Asda stores by more than 50%.
Growth Following a Strong Year for Asda
The agreement comes after a successful year for Asda, during which the supermarket added 120 Subway stores to its retail portfolio. The new openings build on that momentum, deepening the partnership between the sandwich chain and the grocery retailer.
Part of a Wider International Push
The UK expansion is part of Subway's broader strategy to grow its footprint across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). By 2031, the company aims to double its number of restaurants to 10,000, including in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
In the last 18 months, Subway has signed six new Master Franchise agreements in the EMEA region, covering 14 countries, including nations in Central Europe, Azerbaijan, the Nordics, Iberia and Qatar. New restaurants built to the Blueprint design and operating model will begin rolling out from January 1 next year.
Company Statement on Expansion
Tracy Gehlan, Subway's EMEA President, said the expansion will help bring the company's freshly made products to more customers. "We're building on a strong foundation across EMEA, with significant opportunities to grow in both existing and new markets," she said.
"Our ambition to double our footprint reflects our confidence in the brand, our development partners and the long-term potential across the region. By expanding in the right locations and improving the experience for our guests and franchisees, we can continue bringing Subway to more guests in EMEA."
