Liverpool are reportedly considering a move to bring midfielder Harvey Elliott back to Anfield in January, following a frustrating loan spell at Aston Villa and a severe injury shortage in their own attacking ranks.
A Loan Deal Gone Quiet
Harvey Elliott has managed just seven appearances for Aston Villa this season since his season-long loan move from Liverpool last summer. The 22-year-old's agreement includes a clause that would make the transfer permanent for £35 million if he reaches ten games for Unai Emery's side.
However, with first-team opportunities limited due to intense competition for the number ten role, that trigger point now looks uncertain. Reports indicate the player himself is disappointed with his lack of minutes at Villa Park.
The Recall Conundrum and a Potential New Deal
While Liverpool's need for reinforcements is growing, recalling Elliott is not straightforward. His loan deal does not include a standard recall clause, meaning any early return would require a fresh agreement between all parties: Liverpool, Aston Villa, and the player.
According to The Athletic, Villa are open to discussing a 'new agreement' that could suit everyone. Manager Unai Emery, despite rarely using Elliott, may be reluctant to weaken his squad mid-season unless a suitable arrangement is found.
Liverpool's Pressing Need for Attackers
The push for Elliott's return is driven by a mounting injury crisis at Anfield. Striker Alexander Isak suffered a fractured fibula and had surgery on December 22nd, with manager Arne Slot confirming he faces "a couple of months" out.
Forward Cody Gakpo has also been sidelined with a muscle injury, though he may return for the weekend fixture. Furthermore, Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt and could be absent until mid-January if his nation progresses.
This leaves Slot's attacking options severely depleted. Elliott, who can operate centrally or on the flank, represents a versatile short-term solution. The club is aware that if he returns, he cannot be loaned out again this season to another club in Europe.
What Happens Next?
Aston Villa travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Saturday, where it remains to be seen if Elliott will get a chance to impress. Liverpool, meanwhile, host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
With Isak out, Hugo Ekitike is expected to lead the line, but support on the flanks is a concern. Slot may have to deploy a trio of attacking midfielders again, as he did in the recent 2-1 win over Tottenham, using Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.
The coming days will be crucial in determining whether a compromise can be reached to facilitate Elliott's return to Merseyside and provide Liverpool with much-needed cover during a challenging period.
