Marc Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player after Liverpool failed to secure his signature in the summer transfer window. The England international's composed performance in Palace's 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Saturday highlighted what the Premier League champions missed out on.
Liverpool had been linked with a £35million move for Guehi, but Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug on the deal on deadline day. Had Liverpool offered £40million earlier in the window, Guehi would have faced his former club as an away player.
The irony is that Liverpool's defensive frailties were exposed against Palace, with Ibrahima Konate struggling against Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Reds were fortunate to go in only 1-0 down at half-time, with Alisson making several saves to keep them in the game.
Guehi, meanwhile, was a class act at the heart of Palace's defence. He completed 19 of 21 passes, made 11 defensive contributions, and led the Eagles to a well-deserved victory. At full-time, he gave Virgil van Dijk a small tap on the back and walked off, showing he simply saw it as job done.
Liverpool's failure to sign Guehi appears to be a rare transfer blunder, and with Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury leaving them short at the back, they may look to rectify that in January.
