Rio Ngumoha’s stunning 100th-minute winner for Liverpool against Newcastle on Monday not only made him the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer at 16 years and 361 days but also vindicated his controversial move from Chelsea last summer. The teenager’s ice-cool finish past Nick Pope at St James’ Park announced his arrival on the Premier League stage, fulfilling the predictions of his coaches.
Ngumoha was regarded as one of England’s brightest academy prospects when he stunned Chelsea by joining Liverpool in 2024. Despite Chelsea’s multiple contract offers and their subsequent ban on Liverpool scouts attending academy matches at their training ground, Ngumoha believed the path to first-team football was clearer at Anfield. Sources say terse words were exchanged at executive level between the clubs.
Chelsea knew what they were losing, with former captain John Terry stating, “This boy is and will be a top player.” However, competition for places at Stamford Bridge is fierce, with the club adding 18-year-old Brazilian winger Estêvão Willian and planning to bring in Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda next summer. One source commented, “A good player who needed to leave. He’s a lovely kid but he’d be playing youth football at Chelsea this season.”
At Liverpool, Ngumoha was immediately placed in the under-18s, then promoted to the under-21s, where coach Barry Lewtas worked on his end product and teamwork. He made his senior debut in January during an FA Cup win against Accrington Stanley. His pre-season performances, including fine goals against Yokohama F Marinos and Athletic Bilbao, convinced manager Arne Slot to give him first-team opportunities.
Ngumoha’s willingness to learn has been praised by coaches from academy level to Slot. His former youth coach at Chelsea, Terry Bobie, credited his older brother James as a key influence, saying, “James saw Rio’s talent and wanted to push him to reach his potential. They worked relentlessly, every single day for years.”
