Liverpool and Galatasaray Both Denied Goals by VAR in Chaotic First Leg

Liverpool and Galatasaray both had goals ruled out by VAR in a controversial Champions League last-16 first leg in Istanbul. Galatasaray thought they had taken a 2-0 lead when Victor Osimhen scored from close range after a defensive error by Ibrahima Konate, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Baris Alper Yilmaz.

Replays showed Yilmaz was behind Liverpool's last defender when the ball was played, but he did not touch it in that phase. TNT Sports co-commentator Steve Sidwell suggested Yilmaz had impacted Konate's ability to clear, leading to the decision.

Liverpool then had a goal ruled out moments later after a scrappy corner. VAR deemed a handball offence had been committed, with both Konate and Virgil van Dijk appearing to handle the ball before it went in. Commentator Sam Matterface confirmed the goal was disallowed because the ball struck Konate's arm and led directly to the goal.

The match ended 1-0 to Galatasaray, but Liverpool's narrow defeat could work in their favour ahead of the return leg at Anfield on March 18. Galatasaray fans are banned from attending the second leg due to sanctions for previous crowd disturbances.

A strong Champions League run remains crucial for Liverpool, who are out of the Premier League title race and still competing in the FA Cup.
