Leyton Orient have done it again. After losing last season's League One Golden Boot winner Charlie Kelman to Charlton Athletic, the O's have unearthed another 20-goal striker in Dom Ballard. The 21-year-old, signed permanently from Southampton, has netted 22 league goals this campaign, matching Erling Haaland's tally in the Premier League.
Ballard's breakout season marks a remarkable turnaround after difficult loan spells at Blackpool and Cambridge United, where he managed just three league goals combined. 'Being settled and having the support of the people around me has been huge,' Ballard told the Mirror after winning the EFL Young Player of the Month award for March.
The striker credits Orient head coach Richie Wellens for rebuilding his confidence and providing the platform to thrive. 'When I first came to Orient, everyone at the club was so supportive and believed in me, even after the year I had,' Ballard said.
Ballard's journey includes growing up in Corfu until age six before returning to England. His early promise at Southampton's academy led to loan moves, but none clicked until his permanent switch to Brisbane Road. 'I'd never take last year back because I learned a lot,' he explained.
With 22 goals in the league, Ballard has become the second consecutive Orient striker to reach the 20-goal mark, a rare feat in the lower leagues. The O's will hope his form continues as they push for a playoff spot.
