Leicester City's Appeal Against Points Penalty Dismissed in Critical Blow
Leicester City's hopes of overturning a six-point deduction have been shattered after an independent appeal board upheld the penalty on Wednesday. The decision deals a major setback to the club's fight for survival in the Sky Bet Championship, with just five matches remaining in the season.
Financial Rule Breach Leads to Sanction
The penalty was originally imposed for breaches of the EFL's profit and sustainability rules over the three-year period ending in the 2023-24 season. An independent commission had recommended the deduction, which Leicester challenged on multiple grounds, including the commission's authority and the severity of the sanction.
The appeal board dismissed all of Leicester's arguments, as confirmed in a Premier League statement. The statement noted that the club was found to have violated financial regulations, and the appeal board also rejected a separate challenge from the Premier League regarding the commission's decision not to increase the penalty for late submission of annual accounts.
Relegation Battle Now More Precarious
Currently positioned in 22nd place in the Championship table, Leicester City are now just one point from safety. However, they have played one more game than Portsmouth, the team directly above them, making their task even more daunting. The Foxes, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons, face an uphill struggle to avoid dropping further.
In a statement on their official website, Leicester City expressed their focus moving forward: "With the matter now at an end and five games of the season remaining, everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us and on shaping the outcome of our season through our results on the pitch."
This ruling underscores the strict enforcement of financial regulations in English football and leaves Leicester's Championship fate hanging in the balance as the season reaches its climax.
