Leeds United have confirmed that a supporter tragically died at Elland Road on Sunday ahead of their Premier League match against Manchester United, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a statement released three hours after full-time, the club said: 'Leeds United are devastated to confirm that a supporter sadly passed away ahead of our Premier League fixture with Manchester United at Elland Road, following a medical emergency in the ground before kick-off. The thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with the family and friends of the supporter at this exceptionally difficult time.'
No further details about the person who died or the circumstances have been released. The match saw Brenden Aaronson put Leeds ahead shortly after the hour mark, with Matheus Cunha equalising for Manchester United three minutes later.
The result moved Leeds six points clear of the relegation zone, while Manchester United remained fifth in the table. Leeds manager Daniel Farke said: 'First of all, I have to say I am proud of my lads because it was, of course, a tricky circumstance for us.'
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim commented: 'I think we played well... we controlled Leeds quite well... but we are losing games in the details.'
