Lampard hails Howe's Newcastle legacy but warns Jaissle test looms

Frank Lampard has credited former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe for laying the foundations of the Magpies' current squad, but insists he cannot afford to take Matthias Jaissle lightly when Coventry City face the Magpies on Monday night.

Jaissle took charge at St James' Park on August 5 and has been trying to put his own stamp on a squad that still contains more than 20 players from the Howe era. In the build-up to the game, Jaissle described Lampard as a "pure legend", and the former Chelsea boss returned the compliment by wishing the Newcastle head coach well for the future.

Lampard on Newcastle's style under Jaissle

Asked about Newcastle under Jaissle, Lampard said: "I've seen elements of what he's trying to bring. I think he came into a team with a manager who did a fantastic job in Eddie Howe.

"Whenever I have been up there to face an Eddie Howe team, there has been speed in the team and the physical power of the team as well.

"Those qualities meant it was always difficult to play against Newcastle and I think the manager is along the same vein in terms of trying to bring energy and vertical football how he puts it.

"I understand it and I wish him well in the job because he's a young manager and these jobs are always challenging and there's a lot of opinion and a lot of scrutiny in what we all do.

"So, I wish him well for that as it's not easy."

Jaissle's solid start at Newcastle

Lampard also acknowledged the solid start Jaissle has made, with Newcastle sitting ninth in the Premier League table despite an uncertain summer on Tyneside.

He said: "I think he came in quite late even in pre-season. He's come in and said here's my philosophy and this is what it looks like exactly.

"That's not easy for anybody. So, I think there'll be some time with that, but he's obviously a very talented manager."
