Tottenham Hotspur winger Mohamed Kudus has suffered a significant new injury setback, delivering a major blow to the club ahead of Roberto De Zerbi's first match as manager. The 25-year-old Ghanaian international, who joined Spurs from West Ham United for £55 million last summer, has re-injured the same thigh muscle that originally sidelined him in January.
Fresh Injury Complicates Recovery Timeline
Kudus had only just returned to first-team training after a three-month absence when he sustained the recurrence. The initial injury occurred during Tottenham's 1-1 Premier League draw against Sunderland in January. While precise time scales remain uncertain and the damage is still being assessed, medical staff fear the problem could require surgical intervention.
Such a procedure would prematurely end Kudus's debut season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Moreover, it would seriously threaten his participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where Ghana are scheduled to face England in the United States this June.
De Zerbi's Difficult Start at Spurs
The timing is particularly unfortunate for new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who was appointed to replace interim manager Igor Tudor. Tudor managed just one point from five Premier League matches and oversaw Champions League elimination after taking over from Thomas Frank in February.
De Zerbi's inaugural match in charge comes at Sunderland on Sunday, with Tottenham mired in a concerning run of 13 Premier League games without victory. The club could slide into the relegation zone if West Ham United defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday evening.
Kudus's Disappointing Debut Campaign
The injury compounds what has been a frustrating first season in North London for the talented winger. After showing occasional flashes of quality early in the campaign, Kudus managed only three goals across 26 appearances in all competitions before his initial injury struck.
His January thigh problem was the first in a devastating sequence of five serious injuries for Tottenham players across five consecutive matches. Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison, Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall all followed Kudus onto the treatment table during that unfortunate period.
Mixed Recovery News for Spurs Squad
While Richarlison and Bergvall have returned to first-team action since March, and Bentancur is believed to be nearing fitness, Davies has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a broken ankle. Kudus's setback now adds another significant name to Tottenham's injury concerns at a critical juncture of the campaign.
The recurrence represents a cruel twist for a player who had been working diligently toward full fitness. Tottenham's medical staff will conduct further assessments to determine the exact severity of the damage and whether surgical intervention proves necessary, with Kudus's World Cup aspirations hanging in the balance.
