Ibrahima Konate is in advanced talks to join Real Madrid following confirmation that he will leave Liverpool at the end of his contract this summer. The French defender had been involved in season-long negotiations with the Reds over a potential extension, but the two parties failed to reach an agreement. Konate will now end his five-year stint at Anfield, paving the way for a free transfer elsewhere.
Real Madrid Bound
Real Madrid, coming off another trophyless campaign, are Konate's preferred destination. A move is expected to materialise provided Florentino Perez is re-elected as club president, according to reports. In April, Konate claimed he was "close to an agreement" and expressed a desire to stay at Liverpool. However, last week it emerged that he would be leaving after an accord could not be reached.
Mixed Season at Anfield
Konate endured an inconsistent 2025-26 season, with some pundits suggesting that contract speculation affected his performances. Liverpool manager Arne Slot publicly criticised the defender, but Konate later improved and remained a regular starter alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool's Replacements
Konate's departure will be offset by the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet, a highly-rated young defender from Rennes. A deal was struck in January, with Liverpool paying up to £60 million to secure the player. Last summer, they also signed Giovanni Leoni, but he suffered a season-ending injury on his debut. It remains unclear whether Liverpool will actively seek another replacement, a decision that may rest with Slot's successor. Andoni Iraola is currently the frontrunner to replace the Dutchman, who was dismissed last week.
Real Madrid's Free Transfer Strategy
The Spanish giants have a history of landing big names on free transfers. Several years ago, they secured Kylian Mbappe when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired. Last summer, Trent Alexander-Arnold moved from Liverpool to Madrid, albeit with a £10 million fee paid to expedite the transfer. Real are set for a summer of change after Jose Mourinho agreed to return as manager for a second stint. Several key players, including Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde, and Aurelien Tchouameni, have been linked with moves away from the Bernabeu.
