One of the most acclaimed television dramas of the past decade is finally returning for a third season, with fresh episodes anticipated after an almost decade-long hiatus. Big Little Lies, which first premiered on HBO in 2017, captivated millions of viewers worldwide with its star-studded cast and gripping narrative.
A Long-Awaited Return
Based on Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel, the series boasted Hollywood legends Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley. A second season quickly followed, adding three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep to the ensemble. Despite critical acclaim and high ratings, including an 89 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, a third season remained uncertain until last September.
Now, series regular Shailene Woodley has confirmed that a third season is in development. In an interview with Deadline, she stated, "I mean, what I know about it is that supposedly it is happening. That is what I know."
What to Expect in Season 3
Woodley hinted that the new season will acknowledge the significant time gap since the last episode. "We're all 10 years older. The children are all 10 years older. They're not really children anymore and most of them are adults now. So the prospect of that is very cool," she said. This suggests that characters like Ziggy (Iain Armitage) and Abigail (Kathryn Newton) could return as adults.
While a production schedule has yet to be confirmed, fans may have to wait until late 2027 or 2028 for the new episodes. Woodley expressed her excitement about reuniting with the cast, saying, "I love my girls. That's what makes it so special. We're each other's people."
Critical and Fan Acclaim
The first two seasons of Big Little Lies are among HBO's biggest hits. One IMDb user described it as "breathtaking" and "a masterpiece of art in every possible way." Another boldly declared, "It's a big statement but this is possibly the best program on television, EVER!!"
The series follows young single mum Jane Chapman (Woodley), who moves to Monterey, California, with her troubled son, Ziggy. She becomes entangled in the lives of affluent women whose perfect existence is shattered by a tragic event at their local school. The second season picks up immediately after, as the women try to conceal a murder while facing pressure from one of their mothers-in-law (Streep).
Where to Watch
Big Little Lies is available to stream on Sky, NOW, and HBO Max. Fans can catch up on the first two seasons before the highly anticipated third installment arrives.
