Jurgen Klopp Lauds Mohamed Salah as Liverpool Legend Prepares to Depart
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has publicly praised Mohamed Salah after the Reds superstar announced his impending departure from the club at the conclusion of the current season. Salah revealed earlier this week that his illustrious nine-year tenure at Anfield will conclude this summer, marking the end of an era that began under Klopp's management.
Klopp's Emotional Tribute to Salah's Legacy
Klopp, who is currently in England to participate in a charity match between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund legends at Anfield this Saturday, spoke exclusively to The Anfield Wrap ahead of the event. When questioned about Salah's announcement, the German tactician disclosed that he had exchanged text messages with the Egyptian forward earlier in the week.
"I know he can only enjoy it if he wins and he scores," Klopp insisted. "I really hope on the last match day you will all have a smile on your face and all be happy and thankful you were part of one of the most incredible careers we will be a part of."
Reflecting on their seven-year working relationship, during which they secured numerous trophies including the Premier League and Champions League, Klopp added: "It was a joy, a challenge, it was hard work from both sides, it was an incredible outcome, it was pretty much everything."
Salah's Remarkable Transformation and Impact
Klopp expressed astonishment at Salah's development and achievements, stating: "I am pretty sure there was a day in Mo's life where he dreamt of something like that - I couldn't imagine that something like this is possible, the numbers he produced, the performances he showed, some of them will be unmatched forever."
The former manager highlighted Salah's integral role in what he described as "the best front three in world football for a long time - the one with the most numbers." Under Klopp's guidance, Salah made 349 appearances, scoring an impressive 211 goals since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2017 for £36.5 million from Roma.
Initial Doubts and Ultimate Success
Klopp recalled Salah's initial concerns about his position in the team upon signing, revealing: "When we signed him, I remember he asked me where will I play. 'Your position, right wing.' He said, 'But Sadio Mane is playing there.' 'Don't you think he could play left wing?' 'That's for Coutinho.' He was really worried about if he would play."
This anxiety contrasted sharply with the player Salah would become, with Klopp marveling: "Can you imagine Mo Salah today compared to that young man at the beginning of his real career?" The Egyptian's transformation was particularly notable given his earlier struggles at Chelsea before flourishing at Fiorentina and Roma.
Clarifying the Julian Brandt Transfer Rumors
Addressing long-standing speculation that Julian Brandt was Klopp's primary target instead of Salah, the German manager provided clarification: "There is always a story that I wanted to sign Julian Brandt or someone like that. The situation with that is if you go for a winger, you talk to seven or eight. Yes we spoke to him, but we spoke to Salah."
Klopp emphasized his conviction in Salah's potential, stating: "Whatever people think, I don't care, but in the moment we were convinced he was the one, more convinced than he was in that moment. Maybe inside he was." This decision ultimately proved instrumental in building one of football's most formidable attacking trios.
As Salah prepares for his final matches in Liverpool red, Klopp's heartfelt tribute underscores the profound impact of their partnership, which delivered historic success and unforgettable moments for the Anfield faithful.
