Harry Kane has revealed that England failed to follow Thomas Tuchel's game plan after taking the lead in their World Cup semi-final against Argentina, contributing to their 2-1 defeat. The Three Lions captain admitted the team sat back instead of pressing for a second goal, allowing Argentina to mount a late comeback.
England's early lead and defensive shift
England took the lead shortly after half-time through Anthony Gordon, putting them on course for a first World Cup final appearance since 1966. However, instead of maintaining pressure, the team dropped deep to defend the lead. Argentina capitalised with late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, turning the tie around and eliminating England.
Kane, speaking to BBC Sport after the match, expressed his devastation. "Gutted for the boys, gutted for everyone - the team, the staff, the fans," said the Bayern Munich striker. "We played a good game, the large majority of it. When we went 1-0 up we seemed to try and hold on, which at this level is not enough."
Kane admits tactical disobedience
The England captain acknowledged that Thomas Tuchel's instruction was to continue pressurising Argentina after Gordon's opener. "The boys are always ready for any moment in the game," Kane said. "When we went ahead the messaging was to go again and get another goal."
He added that once Argentina scored twice, the instruction shifted to trying to find an equaliser, but England could not regain momentum. "Then once they scored their two goals (the instruction) was to try and find something but we couldn't quite get the momentum back in the game."
Third-place play-off ahead
Despite the semi-final defeat, England still have one match remaining at the World Cup. They will face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday in Miami. Kane and his teammates will aim to end the tournament on a positive note after falling short of the final.
