Liverpool and Wolves paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield on Saturday, the first meeting between the two clubs since the forward's death in July. Jota, 28, died alongside his younger brother Andre Silva in a car crash in Spain.
Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso, watched from the stands while two of their children, Dinis and Duarte, served as mascots, walking out with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. A banner on the Kop read: 'Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda — Anfield will always be your home.'
Two mosaics were unfurled during a minute's silence, displaying 'DJ 20' and 'AS 30' in honour of Jota and his brother. Liverpool have retired Jota's number 20 shirt, and fans regularly sing his chant in the 20th minute of matches.
In his programme notes, Liverpool manager Arne Slot wrote: 'Doing so leads me to think especially of the family of Diogo Jota on what will be their first Christmas without him... I can only hope that the feeling of love and affection that Diogo still generates brings them some solace.'
Van Dijk added: 'The loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in July was something none of us could ever have prepared for... They will never, ever be forgotten, and we will carry their memory always.'
