Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has emphasised that securing European football for next season must be the immediate priority for whoever takes over as manager until the end of the campaign. The club currently sits seventh in the Premier League, three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool, with only league position now able to secure a spot in the Europa League or Champions League.
Darren Fletcher is currently in interim charge following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, but his tenure has begun with a draw against Burnley and an FA Cup exit to Brighton. United's chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are actively seeking a new boss to steady the ship, with Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer among those linked.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Jones stressed the need for stability at Old Trafford. "It's been difficult for a number of months," he said. "Whoever comes in for the rest of the season, the aim has to be to finish in those Europa League spaces or the Champions League." Jones added that the club needs "some stability, some calmness" to build momentum and secure wins.
Fletcher himself admitted uncertainty about his future following the Brighton loss, stating he had received no indication from the club beyond reporting for training the next day. "I care for the club and I want the club to do well," he said. Carrick, a former United midfielder, is currently the favourite to take charge until the season's end.
