John Terry is auctioning the shirt he wore during his infamous penalty slip and miss in the 2008 Champions League Final against Manchester United. The former Chelsea captain is selling a collection of memorabilia to raise funds for the John Terry Foundation, which supports various charities nationwide.
The 2008 kit, which features the grass stains from his slip in Moscow, has a starting bid of $5,000 (£3,700). Terry was called upon to take the decisive penalty after Cristiano Ronaldo's miss, but slipped as he struck the ball and hit the post. Manchester United went on to win in sudden death.
Also included in the auction is the kit Terry wore when lifting the 2011/12 Champions League trophy, despite being suspended for the final itself. Other items include his first Premier League winners' medal from the 2004-05 season, which could fetch up to £75,000, and match-worn shirts from Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
The auction will take place on Wednesday, 31 December via online auction house Goldin. Terry said: 'My foundation is going to benefit with two very close to my heart foundations that are in desperate need of the money. It's going to a great cause, so all the support is going to be welcome.'
Goldin described the collection as a testament to Terry's 'remarkable' career. 'When considering the greatest defenders in the history of English football, John Terry's name can often be found at the forefront of the conversation,' a spokesperson said.
