Charlie Smyth's journey to the NFL is a testament to perseverance. Having played Gaelic football for Mayobridge and later making his debut for the Down county team in 2023, he pursued an American dream through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program (IPPP). After months of grinding on the practice squad, his dedication paid off when he was elevated to the Saints' active roster at the end of November 2025, finally making his official league debut.
The pinnacle of his young career arrived just weeks later. With the game on the line against the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers, Smyth was called upon for a high-pressure 47-yard field goal attempt. Rather than a raucous night out in New Orleans, Smyth chose a subdued celebration with his closest family. He enjoyed pizzas and a few beers with his mother, sister, and girlfriend at his apartment, wishing his father, who was tied up with work, could have joined them.

Smyth's success story shines even brighter against the backdrop of the NFL's notoriously volatile kicking landscape, where many teams have cycled through multiple players at the position this season. Despite the pressure of performing in front of 70,000 people, the Irishman remains unflappable.
Recalling the moments before his decisive kick, Smyth said he had a feeling the opportunity would arise. "I remember smiling as [the offense] was driving up the field," he said. "It's what you come over here to do, right?... It's those moments where you're sleeping at night and you're thinking, Wouldn't it be cool to have a game winning attempt?"
His mindset in the crucial moment was simple and focused: "I wasn't thinking, 'Oh, there's 70,000 people here. What if I miss?' It's not like that. It's just go out and just own what you've been doing."
