A second-tier Turkish football derby between Goztepe and Altay was abandoned on Sunday after a pitch invader attacked the visiting goalkeeper with a corner flag. The incident occurred 25 minutes into the first half at Goztepe's stadium in Izmir.
Play had already been stopped due to disturbances in the stands, with fans receiving medical treatment. A Goztepe supporter then ran onto the pitch, picked up the corner flag, and struck Altay goalkeeper Ozan Evrim Ozenc before being restrained by players and security staff.
The match, a historically fierce rivalry between the two Izmir-based clubs, had earlier been halted in the 19th minute after fireworks were thrown from the away section towards home fans. The game was subsequently abandoned following the attack.
In a separate incident on Sunday, the Russian Cup match between Zenit St Petersburg and Spartak Moscow saw six red cards issued after a mass brawl in stoppage time. With the score 0-0 and penalties approaching, a clash between Quincy Promes and Wilmar Barrios sparked a large fracas involving players and staff from both sides. Three players from each team were sent off, including two substitutes and one unused substitute. Zenit went on to win the penalty shootout 4-2.
