Eddie Howe Urges Newcastle to 'Break New Ground' in Champions League Clash with Barcelona
Howe's Newcastle Injury Update Ahead of Barcelona Champions League Tie

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has delivered a crucial injury update while issuing a rallying cry to his players ahead of their monumental Champions League encounter with Barcelona. The Magpies face the Spanish giants in the last 16, with Howe emphasising his desire for the team to "break new ground" in European competition.

Historic Opportunity for Newcastle

Howe described this week's match as potentially "the biggest game in the club's history," acknowledging the significance of Newcastle reaching the Champions League knockout stages for only the second time. The previous occasion came under a different format during the 2002/03 season, making this achievement particularly noteworthy for the current squad.

Despite exiting the FA Cup against Manchester City last weekend, Newcastle now have the opportunity to create lasting European memories. "I want the club to break new ground and to keep going in this competition having worked so hard to get here," Howe declared passionately.

Injury and Illness Concerns

The Newcastle camp faces several fitness challenges ahead of the crucial tie. Key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes remains sidelined until next month, though there is positive news regarding defender Tino Livramento's potential return.

"He probably hasn't done enough training to be 100 per cent confident he is in a physical enough state to start," Howe cautioned about Livramento. "It's a delicate balance but he trained again this morning, he trained on Friday and it's a massive boost for us to have him back."

Howe also revealed illness concerns within the squad, with Anthony Gordon, Joelinton and Jacob Murphy all affected before the Manchester City match. "No fresh injuries but we have a little bit of illness in the camp. Hopefully we will have everyone available tomorrow," the manager confirmed.

Embracing the Challenge

Newcastle enter the tie as underdogs, particularly with the second leg scheduled for Barcelona's formidable Camp Nou stadium. However, Howe believes his players thrive in such high-pressure situations.

"Rising to the occasion and embracing the size of the game has helped us in the past," Howe reflected. "We are going to need to break new ground in terms of performance levels and when we need to perform, there is no better time than these two games."

The manager highlighted the squad's four-year journey to reach this stage, stating: "Over my time of four years, we have worked really hard to get to this point. There's only 16 teams left and we are one of them. We don't want to waste that opportunity and this is a moment for us to grab it."
