Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has opened up about the decisive conversations that led to his dramatic deadline-day exit from Old Trafford last summer.
The Clear Message from United
In a revealing interview, the 22-year-old Danish international confirmed that the club's hierarchy, under manager Ruben Amorim, made their position unmistakably clear. "United made it very clear that I wasn't part of their plans for this year, coming into the season," Hojlund told Sports Illustrated.
This frank assessment prompted a major change of heart for the forward, who had initially been determined to stay and fight for his place during pre-season. The lack of European football at United also played a role, creating an opportunity that Napoli were quick to seize.
Conte's Crucial Call and Napoli's Form
Hojlund explained that once Napoli's interest became known, he directed his representatives to pursue that move exclusively. A pivotal factor was a conversation with the Italian club's manager, Antonio Conte.
"He's an incredible coach, I've only seen him do good things everywhere he's been," Hojlund said. "Obviously, that was a big part of it. When he calls, you just have to say yes."
The loan move, which included a £5.2 million fee and an obligation-to-buy clause set at £38 million, has proven fruitful. Hojlund has scored six goals in 12 Serie A appearances, including four in his last three matches. This already matches his entire Premier League tally from the previous campaign.
Reflecting on His United Chapter
Despite his struggles to consistently find the net in Manchester, Hojlund retains positive memories of his time at the club. He reflected fondly on his debut season, where he netted 16 goals, became the team's top scorer, enjoyed a good Champions League run, and won a trophy.
"I was a United supporter. I think I did well," he stated, acknowledging the intense pressure that accompanied his £72 million move in 2023. "I'm here now with Napoli and I'm so happy to be here. But I was happy with my time in Manchester."
Hojlund's recent double in Napoli's 2-0 win over Cremonese has helped Conte's side to third place in Serie A, just two points behind leaders Inter Milan. As he continues his revival in Italy, United will be watching closely, with a significant permanent fee potentially on the horizon next summer.
