Rasmus Hojlund Voices Discontent with Manchester United and Ruben Amorim
Rasmus Hojlund has openly criticised his former club Manchester United and manager Ruben Amorim, while expressing satisfaction with his current loan spell at Napoli. The Danish striker, who joined United from Atalanta for approximately £72 million in 2023, has revealed he felt "put in a bit of a box" towards the end of his tenure at Old Trafford.
Struggles at Manchester United and Napoli Revival
After a promising debut season, Hojlund's performance declined significantly in his second campaign. He endured a 21-game goal drought as Manchester United recorded their worst-ever finish in Premier League history. This downturn prompted his loan move to Serie A champions Napoli during the summer transfer window.
Since arriving in Italy, Hojlund has rediscovered his scoring touch, netting 14 times in 37 appearances. His resurgence has been a highlight of Napoli's season, contrasting sharply with his struggles in England.
Hojlund's Candid Reflections on His United Experience
In an interview with Danish outlet TV2, Hojlund shared his perspective on his time at Manchester United. He stated, "I got what I wanted with my transfer. I got a team that believes in me a lot. A club that believes in me a lot. A sporting director, a president and a coach who wants me." However, he admitted feeling limited towards the end, adding, "I was put in a bit of a box at the end in Manchester. I knew there wouldn't be much football for me if it continued like this."
Hojlund also addressed the media portrayal of his career, noting that while he was happy playing in Manchester, a negative image was formed in Denmark. He said, "I know that, especially in Denmark, a media image was formed that it was all just s**t and terrible and that I played like a bag of nuts, but that's not how I look at it." He acknowledged the challenge of avoiding media influence, emphasising the importance of maintaining balance in his self-assessment.
Media Influence and Personal Growth
The striker highlighted the pervasive role of media in modern football, stating, "The media has so much to say in this football world, and it's hard not to be influenced." He reflected on his current success at Napoli, remarking, "Now it's portrayed as if I'm back and just doing really well. But inside myself my thoughts are in a completely different place. I'm self-critical." Hojlund expressed a desire to improve further, aiming for greater involvement in games and more goals.
He also contrasted the environments at Napoli and Manchester United, particularly in terms of media attention in Denmark. Hojlund concluded, "It's clear that there is also a difference between Napoli and Manchester United, especially in Denmark. But I have to live with the headlines – they will always be there because someone wants to use me as an eye-catcher."
Looking Ahead
Hojlund's comments shed light on the pressures faced by top footballers and the impact of club dynamics on performance. His loan move to Napoli has provided a fresh start, allowing him to regain confidence and form. As he continues to excel in Serie A, his future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with this interview likely to fuel speculation about a permanent departure.
The striker's journey underscores the challenges of adapting to new leagues and the critical role of support from club management. His story serves as a reminder of the complexities behind football transfers and the personal resilience required to thrive at the highest level.
