Sky Sports presenters were compelled to intervene and caution Erling Haaland about his choice of words after the Manchester City forward uttered profanities during his live post-match interview on Sunday.
Haaland's Decisive Goal Overshadowed by Language Controversy
Haaland emerged as the hero at the Etihad Stadium, netting the decisive goal in a pivotal Premier League clash against Arsenal, securing a 2-1 victory for his side. This crucial win propelled Pep Guardiola's team to within three points of the Gunners, with an additional game in hand, intensifying the title race as it approaches its dramatic conclusion.
Live Broadcast Incident Draws Immediate Response
However, the Norwegian international's actions off the pitch garnered significant attention. During his interview with Sky Sports, Haaland employed explicit language while praising teammate Bernardo Silva, remarking, 'I remember that cross, I told him after when he headed it out, I told him you were like 'f***ing Cannavaro.''
Reporter Patrick Davison promptly reminded Haaland that such language was unacceptable on air. Haaland retorted, 'Come on, we are all swearing a little bit in our lives.' Subsequently, presenter Dave Jones issued an apology to viewers for the offensive remarks.
A Recurring Pattern of On-Air Expletives
This incident is not an isolated occurrence for the prolific striker. Haaland has previously been admonished for similar behaviour on live television. In 2024, he was warned after exclaiming 'S*** happens' following City's triumph over Leicester. Additionally, he swore twice after his debut against West Ham and during the club's title celebration in 2023.
Broadcasting regulations enforced by Ofcom strictly prohibit the airing of 'the most offensive language' before the 9pm watershed, underscoring the seriousness of such breaches.
Haaland Reflects on Physical Encounter with Gabriel
On the field, Haaland delivered a combative performance, notably outmanoeuvring his longstanding adversary, Arsenal defender Gabriel, to score the winning goal. The pair engaged in several off-the-ball confrontations during the second half, with some analysts suggesting Gabriel was fortunate to avoid a red card after aggressively moving his head towards Haaland.
Reflecting on the altercation, Haaland stated, 'I think it's always like this. A lot of fighting and these kind of things. Of course, I scored the goal. I won that battle in the decisive moment, the cross was perfect. It was a great goal. In the end, we win.'
He further elaborated, 'If I fell on the floor there, which I will not do unless someone really attacks me, then it would maybe be red card. I'm not sure, I haven't seen the situation. It is what it is, I will not fall on the floor. For me I don't know why he comes up to my face.'
This episode highlights the ongoing challenge broadcasters face in managing spontaneous player interviews, particularly with outspoken personalities like Haaland, whose passionate demeanour occasionally clashes with broadcasting standards.
