Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has launched a passionate defence of Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, insisting his former assistant is not receiving the credit he deserves. The Blues suffered a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United in midweek, leaving them nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal and prompting some fans to turn on Maresca.
Guardiola hit back at the criticism, highlighting Maresca's achievements at Stamford Bridge. 'One of the best managers in the world, Enzo Maresca... the job he has done at Chelsea does not get enough credit,' Guardiola said. He pointed to winning the Club World Cup, the Conference League, and securing Champions League qualification with a young team as exceptional feats.
The City boss expressed sympathy for managers struggling with the current fixture congestion, noting that rotation can lead to unexpected defeats. 'You are able to win games, games, games and after you lose, lose, lose. It only happens in this league,' he added.
Separately, Guardiola provided an update on midfielder Rodri, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since October. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has played just one minute in the last 11 games. Guardiola admitted Rodri could be 'a few weeks' away from returning and that it may be next season before he is back to his best, stressing the need for caution to avoid further setbacks.
