Guardiola Explains Haaland's Early Substitution Due to Injury Concerns
Guardiola on Haaland Substitution Amid Injury Fears

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided clarification regarding the early substitution of star striker Erling Haaland during their commanding 3-0 victory over Fulham. Haaland was withdrawn at half-time as a precautionary measure after expressing discomfort, despite having scored a goal that propelled him into the club's record books.

Precautionary Withdrawal Following Discomfort

Guardiola revealed that Haaland reported "niggles" and some physical problems, leading to his replacement by Omar Marmoush with City already leading comfortably. "He feels uncomfortable," Guardiola stated. "It was 3-0, of course. The reason why? Many games... I didn't speak with the doctors, I don't know exactly what he has. Just fatigue or something."

Historic Goal Before Substitution

Before his departure, Haaland netted City's third goal of the evening, marking his 153rd strike for the club. This achievement moved him level with Colin Bell, placing him joint fourth on Manchester City's all-time scoring list. The goal followed earlier contributions from Antoine Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly, who had put City in a dominant position.

City's Comprehensive Victory

The win proved straightforward for City, who barely needed to shift out of second gear against a disappointing Fulham side. This result brings City within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, who face Brentford in their upcoming fixture. Guardiola remained focused on performance rather than league standings, emphasizing, "We were not nine points behind before Anfield, we are not three points ahead before Brentford v Arsenal. After that we will see."

Positive Performances Across the Pitch

Antoine Semenyo continued his impressive form, scoring his fifth goal in eight appearances for City before assisting O'Reilly for the second goal. Guardiola praised the Ghanaian winger, saying, "He has incredible skills and he is so open-minded and generous in the effort. He has an incredible sense of goal for the chaos of second goals. Really good."

Semenyo had earlier appealed for a penalty, claiming his hair was pulled during a corner, though the video assistant referee determined there was insufficient evidence to award a spot-kick.

Fulham's Struggles Continue

Fulham's defeat extends their miserable record against City to twenty consecutive losses across all competitions. Manager Marco Silva acknowledged his team's shortcomings, stating, "Not good enough. We have to be humble enough to congratulate our opponent. Definitely, City was better than us. Simple as that."

Silva highlighted defensive errors, including a misdirected clearance that led to Semenyo's opener and poor organization during the counter-attack for the second goal. "We have to put more on the pitch, definitely," he admitted.

Looking Ahead

While City's victory was comprehensive, the potential injury to Haaland remains a concern. Guardiola emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, saying, "I always say the focus is to grow, grow, grow. It's how we can be more consistent over 90 minutes, how we can be better and the players feel that they are doing what we want to do."

As the Premier League title race intensifies, City will hope Haaland's discomfort proves minor, ensuring their prolific striker remains available for the crucial fixtures ahead.
