Manchester United's Sell-On Clause for Mason Greenwood Could Prove Lucrative

Manchester United reportedly included a significant sell-on clause in the transfer deal that sent Mason Greenwood to Marseille earlier this summer. The clause, believed to be between 40 and 50 per cent, could yield a substantial financial return for the Red Devils if the 22-year-old continues his impressive form in Ligue 1.

Greenwood has made a sensational start to his Marseille career, scoring five goals in his first three league appearances. He bagged a brace on his debut against Brest, followed by a goal against Reims, and scored twice in two minutes in Saturday's 3-1 win over Toulouse. His performances have already attracted attention from Europe's top clubs.

United sold Greenwood after deciding he would be better off rebuilding his career away from Old Trafford. The one-cap England international was arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. He denied any wrongdoing, and the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. He never played for United again after his arrest, spending last season on loan at Getafe before his permanent move to Marseille for around £26.5 million.

The sell-on clause, reported by Sky Sports, could prove a masterstroke by United's decision-makers at INEOS. If Greenwood continues to shine under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille may command a much higher transfer fee in the future, with clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid potentially interested. United would then benefit from a significant portion of that fee.

After leaving Old Trafford, United released a brief statement: 'We wish Mason all the best in his future career.' Greenwood, speaking to La Provence, reflected on his personal life: 'With my partner, we rebuilt ourselves together, as a couple... I am now looking towards the future and I am only focused on Olympique de Marseille and on our new life together in Marseille.'
