Anthony Gordon has revealed he has missed playing alongside Lewis Hall since completing his move from Newcastle United to Barcelona in the summer. The pair linked up on the left wing for England on Tuesday night as the Three Lions earned a 2-0 victory over Czechia.
Reunion on the left wing
Gordon continued his fine form in front of goal to open the scoring for Thomas Tuchel's side, and showed a solid partnership for England that was forged on Tyneside. The duo played 87 matches together for the Magpies, and they quickly found their groove again as Hall returned to action for the national team, having missed out on a place at the World Cup.
Ex-Everton star Gordon couldn't help but admit he was missing his team-mate since making the move to La Liga. "Yeah, yeah, Hally. I've missed playing with Hally," he told ITV Sport.
Hall takes his opportunity
"He's a top player, a top lad and we had great chemistry at Newcastle, so glad to share this stage with him."
Hall completed 90 minutes at the Fortuna Arena in Prague after revealing on Monday that he hoped to take his chance when it arrived. The 22-year-old was very aware that he was coming into a group that had bonded over the summer and embraced his opportunity to join it.
"It's interesting because all of the lads had been together for seven weeks in the summer, creating good bonds and relationships and understood what was required of them," he said.
Tuchel praises Hall's display
"For me, it's about coming in and indulging in that, taking on all the information and whenever I get my opportunity, make sure I do the right things."
"Whenever there's injuries or different things that happen, there's always opportunities for other players. There's been a lot of good left-backs over the last couple of years that have played in that role. Whenever I get my opportunity, I'm going to try and take it."
And it appears he has taken a positive step towards doing so. England boss Tuchel was pleased with Hall's return to the lineup, in addition to that of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
"Both good," he said. "The position in the second half suited Trent more than in the first half."
"Lewis did excellent on the other side. Well done. Credit to all of them because they deserved and now it is important that we relax and enjoy the evening, do a good recovery and then prepare for Croatia."
Hall has two more opportunities to add to his England caps before turning to Newcastle. The Three Lions face Croatia and Czechia in the next seven days before Premier League action returns.
