Tracey Neville has condemned the ‘truly scary’ moment her brother, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, was subjected to vile abuse while out walking. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media platform X, shows a member of the public approaching Neville in broad daylight and launching a tirade of expletives.
The video, which has been viewed over 2.5 million times and liked 23,000 times, shows the man filming himself as he shouts insults at Neville. The 51-year-old football pundit is seen responding briefly before the man continues his abusive rant, which includes references to Neville’s alleged disconnect from the working class.
Tracey Neville, a former netball player, replied to the video on X, writing: “Situations like these are truly scary and I can assure you they are not delightful.” Her comment came in response to the video’s caption, which described the abuse as “delightful”.
Former footballer John Hartson also weighed in, calling the abuser a “moron” and questioning what he hoped to achieve. Hartson added: “If you feel like you want to abuse people, go do it in front of your TV screen, not in public. Not very clever!”
Neville has yet to publicly respond to the incident. He was on commentary duty for Sky Sports over the weekend, covering Manchester City’s victory against Arsenal. The abuse comes after Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher was also subjected to verbal abuse by Everton fans ahead of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win.
