French Media React as Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri Faces Uncertainty at Marseille

Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri watched from the bench as Marseille suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Brest on Friday, marking new manager Habib Beye's debut in charge. The 18-year-old midfielder was restricted to just 25 minutes as a substitute, raising questions about his future role at the struggling French club.

Marseille's Struggles Continue Under New Leadership

Following Roberto De Zerbi's departure, Marseille appointed former club captain Habib Beye as head coach, hoping to reverse a run of three winless Ligue 1 fixtures. However, Beye's first game ended in disappointment, with Brest securing victory through goals from Ludovic Ajorque in the 10th and 29th minutes.

Nwaneri, who joined Marseille on loan from Arsenal, was left among the substitutes, with Beye opting for Arthur Vermeeren in an attacking position instead. The Englishman eventually entered the match in the 71st minute, receiving a yellow card shortly before stoppage time but failing to make a meaningful impact.

French Media Deliver Verdict on Nwaneri's Prospects

French outlets have weighed in on Nwaneri's situation, with GFNF predicting ahead of the match that he might struggle to secure a starting role under Beye. Their report stated, "Nwaneri is only good enough for the bench," a prediction that proved accurate as Vermeeren started in his place.

Local publication La Provence highlighted Beye's tactical choices, noting, "For his debut in the sky blue and white, the former club captain opted for a textbook 4-3-3 formation. But one that had the merit of putting his new charges in a comfortable position, especially Arthur Vermeeren, who returned to the starting eleven after a month and a half on the bench."

Eurosport France's match report described Marseille's performance as listless, stating, "The hoped-for resurgence following the arrival of Beye may have materialised after the break. But it wasn't enough to fully awaken this decidedly listless OM side."

Arteta's Concerns and Nwaneri's Diminished Role

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had acknowledged that De Zerbi was a key factor in sending Nwaneri to Marseille, making Beye's appointment a source of uncertainty for the youngster. Under De Zerbi, Nwaneri appeared firmly in first-team contention, but Vermeeren's resurgence could significantly reduce his minutes.

When Nwaneri did feature against Brest, he replaced Amine Gouiri, one of Marseille's more prominent players, but failed to influence the game. La Provence's post-match analysis was scathing, calling the performance "disgraceful, particularly in the first half."

Marseille had a late chance to salvage pride with a penalty, but Mason Greenwood failed to convert, compounding their woes. With Nwaneri benched for most of the fixture, early signs suggest his dismal run of form may persist under Beye's management.

The defeat leaves Marseille in a precarious position, and Nwaneri's future at the club remains unclear as French media continue to scrutinize his role and the team's overall cohesion.
