Thomas Frank blames Ollie Watkins for Tottenham vs Aston Villa FA Cup brawl
Frank blames Watkins for post-match FA Cup brawl

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has pointed the finger directly at Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins for instigating a mass confrontation that marred the end of Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie.

Post-Match Chaos Erupts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The highly-charged clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which saw Aston Villa secure a 2-1 victory, ended in chaos after the final whistle. The flashpoint occurred when Villa's match-winner, Ollie Watkins, engaged in exuberant celebrations in front of the home supporters.

Spurs midfielder Joao Palhinha took strong exception to the England international's actions, leading to a heated exchange. The altercation quickly escalated, drawing in numerous players from both sides as coaching staff and officials rushed to separate the feuding groups.

Frank's Fiery Post-Match Accusation

In a tense post-match press conference, the Danish Tottenham boss did not hold back in his assessment of the incident. Frank squarely placed the blame on Watkins, suggesting the forward's conduct was deliberately inflammatory.

"It's about keeping a cool head, the players gave everything," Frank stated. "Losing a tight game, season not going perfectly and Ollie is very provoking. He can easily just walk around. Everyone who has been in a competitive nature, that can trigger things."

When questioned about his own players' need for restraint, Frank acknowledged the fine line between passion and provocation. "You need to play with passion, sometimes you play to the line and sometimes borderline," he added. "I see players with big passion and that is important, but we also need cool heads."

Villa Celebrate Hard-Fought Victory

In stark contrast to the discontent in the Tottenham camp, the Villa dressing room was filled with jubilation following a significant cup win. Goals from Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers had put Villa in control, and they managed to withstand a second-half fightback after Wilson Odobert's strike for Spurs.

Match-winner Rogers, who now has eight goals this season, praised his team's resilience. "We wanted to build on the first half... they came out well in the second half," the 23-year-old said. "They're a good team, they're at home in front of their fans, and we had to dig deep, we had to work and defend our box. We did well and I think we deserved the win in the end."

Rogers also highlighted the positive mood within Unai Emery's squad, adding: "I'm feeling really good and I'm in a good bit of form. I'm feeling positive and confident - but so are the team - and that's the most important thing."

The result sets up a fourth-round FA Cup tie for Aston Villa, who return to Premier League action next weekend against Everton at Villa Park. Tottenham, meanwhile, must regroup for a crucial home league fixture against West Ham United as they look to address a challenging season.
