England take on Norway in the World Cup 2026 quarter-final on Thursday with four players walking a disciplinary tightrope. Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Nico O'Reilly, and Marc Guehi are all one yellow card away from missing the semi-final if England progress.
FIFA's New Yellow Card Rules
Due to the World Cup expansion from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA has adjusted its yellow card regulations. Previously, two yellow cards before the semi-final resulted in an automatic one-match ban. Now, yellow cards are wiped twice: after the group stage and after the quarter-finals. As a result, Rice is not suspended for the Norway clash despite picking up his second yellow card against Mexico inside the first minute. His earlier booking against Ghana was wiped after the group stage.
Players at Risk
Jude Bellingham received a yellow card in the 2-1 round-of-16 win over DR Congo, placing him at risk. Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi also have one yellow card each. FIFA confirmed that Guehi, not captain Harry Kane, was booked in the 68th minute against Mexico. Jordan Henderson was also on one yellow card but is no longer a risk after undergoing wrist surgery, ending his tournament.
Quansah Suspended
Jarell Quansah will miss the Norway game as he serves the first match of a two-game ban following his red card against Mexico. England must navigate the quarter-final carefully to avoid further suspensions ahead of a potential semi-final.
