In a surprising career pivot, former Bundesliga coach and player Alexander Nouri has officially stepped away from professional football to take on a new role managing fast-food restaurants. The 46-year-old, whose playing career included spells at clubs like Werder Bremen and Holstein Kiel, has traded the touchline for the service counter, now overseeing two McDonald's branches in Germany.
A Dramatic Shift from Pitch to Restaurant
Nouri, who earned his coaching badges alongside current Germany national team manager Julian Nagelsmann back in 2016, has decided to leave the sport behind, at least for the foreseeable future. His coaching journey included positions at VfB Oldenburg and a notable stint as manager of Werder Bremen, where he was promoted from interim to permanent boss in 2017. His last coaching role was with Greek side Kavala, which he departed in 2022.
Finding New Purpose in Fast Food
The ex-attacking midfielder now manages two McDonald's restaurants: one located in Herzogenrath, a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia, and another in the nearby area of Kohlscheid. In an interview with the German publication Suddeutsche Zeitung, Nouri reflected on the unexpected similarities between his old and new professions.
'Ultimately, both worlds are about bringing people together. In football, it's the players; here, it's the employees,' he explained. 'The basic principle is the same: you have to understand who is in front of you, what motivates him, what he needs to perform.'
The Quest for Stability Behind the Career Change
Nouri revealed that the search for greater job security was a key driver in his decision to leave football. He highlighted the precarious nature of coaching roles, noting, 'When you sign your contract, you're also signing your dismissal.' This sentiment echoes the volatile reality of football management, where tenures can be brutally short.
During his time at Werder Bremen, Nouri achieved significant success, guiding the team to survival in the Bundesliga and nearly securing European qualification. However, his tenure ended abruptly in 2018 when he was sacked after just ten games into the season, following a winless start.
Legacy and Future Prospects
At the time of his dismissal, Bremen CEO Frank Baumann acknowledged Nouri's contributions, stating, 'Alex was tasked with a very demanding challenge last season, and successfully mastered it. We'd like to thank him for that. He has what it takes to be a successful coach. I am convinced that he will continue on his path elsewhere.'
While Nouri did continue coaching after leaving Bremen, he has now chosen to step away from the sport entirely, embracing a new chapter in the fast-food industry. His story underscores the unpredictable nature of professional sports careers and the diverse paths individuals can take in pursuit of personal fulfilment and stability.
