Darren Fletcher defends Shea Lacey after Man Utd teen's red card vs Brighton
Fletcher defends emotional Lacey after Man Utd red card

Manchester United's young talent Shea Lacey experienced a dramatic and emotional end to his FA Cup appearance against Brighton, with caretaker manager Darren Fletcher offering a staunch defence of the teenager's character after the match.

Fletcher's Firm Defence of Teenage Talent

Darren Fletcher has insisted that Shea Lacey's visible disappointment following his late red card is a sign of how much he cares, after the 18-year-old was dismissed in the closing stages of United's defeat. Lacey, introduced as a substitute after the hour mark, received two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for throwing the ball away in frustration at a decision.

The caretaker boss was unequivocal in his support, highlighting the youngster's promising future at Old Trafford. "He's disappointed because he cares and he understands and he knows he will learn from it," Fletcher stated. "There is no doubt about his talent and it was a steep learning curve today but we believe in Shea. He's one of our most exciting young prospects."

The Incident and Lacey's Reaction

The sending-off came at a crucial moment in the match on Sunday, shortly after Benjamin Sesko had pulled a goal back for United. Lacey looked stunned when referee Simon Hooper produced the red card, halting United's momentum as they were reduced to ten men.

As he trudged towards the tunnel, the emotionally raw teenager removed his shirt and covered his face. Fletcher, however, framed the incident as a harsh but valuable lesson. "I'm sure at Old Trafford he will have a chance to make amends for that in the future," the United coach added.

Controversy and Apology

Fletcher also directed criticism at the officiating, claiming Lacey was hard done by. "Shea Lacey's yellow card is ridiculous compared to the fouls that we had against us all game which ultimately then the lad makes a mistake and is sent off. For me it is poor refereeing," he claimed.

Taking responsibility for his actions, Lacey later issued a public apology on social media. He wrote: "I want to apologise to all of my teammates staff and the fans. I let everybody down tonight I shouldn’t let my emotions get the better of me I will do everything I can to make this right."

The defeat could mark Fletcher's final game in temporary charge, with the club set to appoint an interim head coach. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly the favourite to return until the season's end. Reflecting on the broader team situation, Fletcher admitted he is managing a squad lacking in confidence. "I think you could see the players are fragile but they've got to respond," he said, challenging them to rediscover their form.
