Fifa President Gianni Infantino has announced the creation of a new 'Fifa peace prize', to be awarded annually to individuals who help unite people through peace. The inaugural prize will be presented on 5 December during the World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, an event expected to be attended by US President Donald Trump.
The announcement comes weeks after Trump was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, which he has actively sought. The timing has raised eyebrows, as Trump's allies have criticised the Nobel committee's decision and called for him to be nominated next year.
Infantino, who has cultivated close ties with the Trump administration, said the prize reflects football's moral responsibility to foster unity. 'In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it's fundamental to recognise those who work to end conflicts,' he stated.
Fifa recently appointed Trump's daughter Ivanka to the board of a $100m education project linked to the 2026 World Cup. The tournament, co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, will feature a record 104 matches across 16 cities from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
