Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United should consider appointing either Antonio Conte or Roberto De Zerbi as their next permanent manager, describing both as 'lunatics' who could shake up the club.
Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, the former United defender argued that after trying various managerial profiles, the club now needs a passionate, uncompromising figure. 'We now probably need to go down the lunatic road,' Ferdinand said, adding that such a manager would be 'a bit gun-slinger type' who challenges the media and club hierarchy.
Ferdinand highlighted Conte's track record of turning around struggling clubs, noting he won the league at Chelsea and Napoli after they finished tenth and eleventh respectively. He also praised De Zerbi for quickly establishing a playing style and identity at his previous clubs.
Michael Carrick is currently interim head coach until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim's dismissal. Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner are among the early favourites for the permanent role, with Glasner set to leave Crystal Palace in the summer.
