Ex-Premier League Referee Condemns Arsenal Star's Conduct in FA Cup Defeat

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has launched a scathing critique of Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, labelling his behaviour during a recent FA Cup match as "total disrespect" towards match officials. The incident occurred in the closing stages of Arsenal's 2-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday night, which saw the Gunners eliminated from the competition.

Controversial Moment Mars Arsenal's FA Cup Exit

In the 94th minute of the match, with Arsenal desperately chasing an equaliser after Shea Charles' 85th-minute winner for Southampton, referee Sam Barrott awarded the visitors a free-kick. Martinelli rushed to the scene, pushing Barrott aside and grabbing the ball in an attempt to restart play quickly. The shocked official responded by issuing a yellow card to the Brazilian forward.

However, Halsey, who officiated in the Premier League between 1999 and 2013, believes this punishment was insufficient. "Referee Sam Barrott awarded a free-kick to Arsenal, Martinelli comes rushing in and he pushes Sam out of the way," Halsey told The Sun. "Now I'm sorry, Gabriel Martinelli showed total disrespect for the match official Sam Barrott in that situation."

Halsey Advocates for Stronger Action to Protect Officials

Halsey argued that Barrott should have issued a red card instead, emphasising the need to set a precedent and demand greater respect for referees at all levels of the game. "Although Sam issued a yellow card, for me it's a red card. You just cannot put your hands on a referee, let alone push him out of the way," he stated.

The former referee highlighted the broader implications for grassroots football, questioning what message such incidents send to local park referees. "You've got to look around the country, up and down, Saturday and Sundays where we have local park referees going out and doing their games. What message does that send out to our local park referees?" Halsey added that while he thought Barrott had a good game overall, he "let the refereeing community down" by not dismissing Martinelli.

Charity and Public Reaction to the Incident

Ref Support UK, a charity that trains and supports officials, echoed Halsey's sentiments on social media platform X. The organisation wrote: "The FA cannot let him get away with that. This will be a missed opportunity if they don’t take action against Arsenal and Martinelli. There has been too many incidents in football where refs are pushed or shoved and football cannot let it escalate any more. I would have loved to see the ref send him off."

The controversy has sparked debate among fans, with many questioning whether Martinelli's actions warranted a sending-off. The incident compounded a miserable night for Arsenal on the south coast, as their hopes of a quadruple this season have dwindled following recent losses in the Carabao Cup final and now the FA Cup.

As Arsenal regroup to focus on their remaining competitions, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding respect for match officials in professional football.
