Ex-Premier League Star Michael Gray Recalls Infamous Wayne Rooney Nightclub Altercation
Former Premier League footballer Michael Gray has publicly discussed the notorious 2006 incident where Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney gave him a black eye during a night out in Manchester. Gray, now 51, has definitively ruled out any possibility of a charity boxing rematch with Rooney, preferring to leave the score settled at "one-up" in favour of the England icon.
The Night That Sparked the Confrontation
The altercation occurred in September 2006 at Panacea bar, a popular celebrity hotspot in Manchester. Gray and Rooney were on separate nights out with their respective groups. According to Gray, he approached Rooney's table and made a light-hearted comment, asking, "Which one are you having tonight?" in reference to the women sitting with Rooney.
What Gray did not realise was that Coleen Rooney, Wayne's now-wife, was among the group. Rooney took immediate offence, reacting by punching Gray and leaving him with a significant black eye. The injury was so noticeable that Gray had to wear sunglasses to conceal it from the paparazzi in the following days.
Gray's Perspective on the Incident
In a recent interview with the Mail, Gray reflected on the event with humour and perspective. When asked about a potential charity boxing match against Rooney, he responded, "I think I'll leave it at Wayne being one-up. I'm not that type of person who I think would climb through the ropes to have a white-collar fight."
He added, "It was just one of those moments that you look back on and I can have a laugh and a joke about it now. It's something that plenty of people ask me about, but what do you put it down to? A mistake at the time, but we've been fine since, so I'm over it."
Official Statements and Aftermath
At the time of the incident, Rooney's spokesman released a statement alleging that Gray, who was then playing for Blackburn Rovers, had made remarks offensive to Coleen and the other female guests at the table. The statement read, "Wayne and Coleen were enjoying a night out with three other couples and were having a quiet dinner when Michael came up to their table uninvited. Michael then began making remarks which were offensive to Coleen and Wayne's other female guests. Several times, Wayne asked Michael to leave. It was a brief incident and as far as Wayne is concerned, he bears no ill feeling towards Michael."
Gray has also discussed the event on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, where he clarified the context. He explained that both Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United players were present in the nightclub, with groups in separate booths. Gray described the atmosphere as young and lively, with many people around.
He emphasised that the comment was meant as normal banter among footballers, unaware of Coleen's presence. Gray dismissed subsequent sensationalised reports, stating, "It came out, 'Gray asks Rooney and Coleen for a threesome and everything'. It was a load of rubbish."
Legacy and Current Status
Today, Michael Gray works as a football commentator, while Wayne Rooney remains a prominent figure in the sport. The incident, though two decades old, continues to be a topic of interest for fans and media alike. Gray's candid reflections provide a clearer picture of the night, highlighting how a moment of misjudged humour led to an unforgettable clash between two Premier League stars.
