Everton ratings: Mykolenko 4/10 in Arsenal defeat

Everton's unbeaten start to the season ended in a second consecutive defeat as Premier League champions Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium. The Blues, who had gone eight matches without a loss in all competitions, fell behind early and never recovered, with defender Vitalii Mykolenko enduring a particularly difficult afternoon before going off injured.

Early Setback and Defensive Struggles

Everton were without Jarrad Branthwaite due to concussion protocol and Jack Grealish through sickness. They conceded after just seven minutes when Ezri Konsa bundled the ball home from close range following a corner-kick. Arsenal doubled their lead on 68 minutes when Gabriel headed in at the back post from Ben White's cross, completing a miserable afternoon for David Moyes' men.

Jordan Pickford was rated 5, making some decent punches in tricky conditions but failing to deal with Arsenal's seventh-minute corner as he and Harrison Armstrong went for the same ball, allowing Konsa to score. He was left flailing at his back post for the second goal, with England manager Thomas Tuchel watching on.

Individual Performances

Merlin Rohl, moving from right-wing to right-back with Ainsley Maitland-Niles dropped to the bench, earned a 6 for hanging in against Eberechi Eze and making an acrobatic clearance. James Tarkowski was Everton's best performer with a 7, described by Moyes as the team's anchor and a leader who "trains like a monster" every day. He won a key headed duel with Viktor Gyokeres but was booked for a tackle on Kai Havertz late on.

Jake O'Brien, brought in for Branthwaite, was rated 5 after losing Gabriel at the back post for the second goal. Vitalii Mykolenko received a 4, suffering a nightmare afternoon: he took a swipe at thin air when trying to clear, allowing Konsa to pounce, seemingly had Noni Madueke laughing at him when he accidentally dribbled the ball out for a corner, was booked for a challenge on White, and then allowed the cross from the same opponent to meet Gabriel for the second goal before going off injured.

Midfield and Attack

James Garner was rated 6, testing David Raya with a low drive and ending the game at left-back following Mykolenko's exit. Harrison Armstrong also earned a 6, colliding with Pickford in the build-up to Konsa's goal but continuing to learn at the highest level. Brennan Johnson was rated 4, with a largely anonymous display leading to his substitution.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (6) combined well with Tyrique George, who was rated 7 after flashing in a shot deflected wide by White. Thierno Barry (5) had a difficult afternoon, with his best opportunity coming when he almost intercepted a White back header. Substitutes Tyler Dibling (6) and Hayden Hackney (6) had little impact, while Charly Alcaraz came on late for a cameo.
