Erica Stoll's Annoyance at Tiger Woods' Late-Night Texts to Rory McIlroy
A new biography has unveiled a surprising source of tension in the friendship between golf superstars Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. According to Alan Shipnuck's book, Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf's Most Human Superstar, McIlroy's wife, Erica Stoll, became increasingly frustrated with Woods' habit of sending text messages to her husband in the middle of the night.
The 4am Texting Habit
The book details that Woods, who has long struggled with insomnia, would often be in the gym at four o'clock in the morning. During these early sessions, he would reportedly send a flurry of messages to McIlroy, who is currently competing as the defending champion at the Masters tournament. McIlroy himself commented on this in 2017, as quoted in the biography via the Daily Mail.
"He struggles to sleep, which I think is an effect of over-training, so I tell him to calm down sometimes," McIlroy said of Woods. "He'd be texting me at four o'clock in the morning: 'Up lifting. What are you doing?' Erica actually got p****d off with it. He was texting me in the middle of the night, and I was like, 'Tiger is in the gym.'"
A Decades-Long Friendship and Rivalry
Despite this minor domestic irritation, Woods and McIlroy have maintained a close and enduring friendship for over two decades. Their relationship spans intense competitive rivalries at major championships, on the PGA Tour, and in the Ryder Cup. McIlroy has often expressed admiration for Woods, describing him as an intriguing and multifaceted character.
"I'm drawn to him, yeah," McIlroy said in 2017. "He's an intriguing character because you could spend two hours in his company and see four different sides to him. He's thoughtful. He's smart. He can't sleep, so that's all he does - he reads stuff and educates himself on everything."
Strengthened Bonds and Business Ventures
The bond between the two golfers deepened significantly following Woods' serious car crash in 2021. During Woods' recovery period, McIlroy visited his friend to offer support and encouragement. Their partnership also extends into the business realm, where they serve as co-founders of TMRW Sports. This venture led to the creation of TGL, an indoor golf league that has recently surged in popularity.
Reflecting on their relationship in 2022, McIlroy stated, "He has been an idol and a hero of mine over the years, and I feel pretty lucky that I've gotten to know him more intimately than some." He added, "Having his influence and having his counsel, not just myself but all of the players on the PGA Tour, he's a great advocate to have, and it's awesome to be doing these things with him."
Recent Challenges for Tiger Woods
However, Woods has recently faced significant personal challenges off the course. On March 27, he was detained by police after flipping his car while attempting to overtake a truck and trailer on Jupiter Island in Florida. Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
The five-time Masters champion had been contemplating participation at Augusta this year prior to the accident. Instead, he announced he would step away from professional golf to concentrate on his health and recovery. In his first public statement regarding the incident, posted on social media platform X, Woods wrote, "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery."
While the late-night texts may have caused a moment of annoyance for Erica Stoll, the profound friendship and mutual respect between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods continues to be a defining narrative in the world of golf, even as both navigate their respective personal and professional journeys.
