England seized the initiative on the opening day of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley, bowling the visitors out for 189 before closing on 112-1. The hosts trail by 77 runs with nine wickets in hand.
New Zealand's Batting Collapse
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat, but their decision backfired as England's pace attack exploited helpful conditions. Gus Atkinson led the way with 4-38, while Matthew Potts claimed 3-45. The Black Caps were reduced to 67-5 at lunch, with only Daryl Mitchell (48) and Tom Blundell (35) offering resistance.
According to England captain Ben Stokes, "We bowled really well as a unit. The pitch had a bit in it, and we made the most of it."
England's Response
In reply, England openers Zak Crawley (47 not out) and Ben Duckett (35) put on 78 for the first wicket before Duckett fell to Matt Henry. Joe Root joined Crawley and remained unbeaten on 22 as England reached stumps without further loss.
The day saw 14 wickets fall, with the pitch offering movement for the seamers. England will look to build a substantial lead on day two.
