Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been suspended by the NFL for two games without pay following his altercation with a Detroit Lions fan during Sunday's game. The league ruled that Metcalf's actions violated policy prohibiting players from entering the stands or making unnecessary physical contact with fans.
Metcalf may appeal the suspension under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with a hearing to be held by the commissioner or his designee. The incident occurred in the second quarter of Pittsburgh's 29-24 victory, when Metcalf appeared to swing at fan Ryan Kennedy after a heated exchange along the railing.
Kennedy, through his lawyers, has denied allegations that he used a racial slur or derogatory language. A statement from his legal team called the claims “completely false” and noted that Kennedy has faced harassment and threats since the incident. Former NFL receiver Chad Ochocinco claimed Metcalf told him the fan used a slur and insulted Metcalf's mother.
Metcalf remained in the game, finishing with four catches for 42 yards. Head coach Mike Tomlin said he had not yet discussed the matter with Metcalf, who was unavailable to reporters. The suspension marks the latest in a series of athlete-fan confrontations, including the 2004 “Malice at the Palace” in the NBA.
