Constitution Hill Set for Flat Turf Debut at Newbury Amid Bookmaker Skepticism
The celebrated former jumps champion, Constitution Hill, is poised to make his highly anticipated debut on the Flat Turf this Saturday at Newbury Racecourse. However, leading bookmaker William Hill has already written off his chances of success, rating him as a significant outsider in the competitive field.
From Jumps Star to Flat Contender
Constitution Hill rose to fame as a superstar in National Hunt racing, securing an impressive ten-race winning streak that included a memorable victory in the Champion Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival. Following a concerning sequence of three falls in just four races, trainer Nicky Henderson made the strategic decision to switch codes, transitioning the nine-year-old gelding to Flat racing.
His Flat career began promisingly with two commanding wins on the all-weather surfaces. In February, he made a stunning debut at Southwell, triumphing by seven lengths in front of a record crowd for the Nottinghamshire track. He followed this up with another novice stakes victory at Kempton in March, where renowned jockey Ryan Moore praised his pace, suggesting he had the potential to be competitive in Group races over a mile-and-a-half distance.
Facing Elite Competition in the John Porter Stakes
The true test of his Flat abilities arrives on Saturday, as Constitution Hill is among ten entries for the prestigious Group 3 John Porter Stakes at Newbury. On official handicap ratings, he enters as the lowest-rated horse in a field that features formidable competitors, including former winner Al Aasy and last year's Derby second favourite, Pride Of Arras.
Despite the excitement surrounding his turf debut, which is expected to draw another large crowd, bookmakers remain unconvinced of his prospects. William Hill has opened him at 10-1 odds, reflecting their assessment that he faces a very stiff challenge against proven Group performers.
Bookmaker's Perspective on the Race
Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, commented on the situation, stating, "While racing fans will be excited to see Constitution Hill make his Flat turf debut on Saturday, we're very happy to lay plenty of him. He's opened at 10-1 with us for the John Porter as we think he's got a very stiff task against what's entered."
Phelps elaborated further, noting, "You've got proven Group performers in the entries, such as Pride Of Arras, Convergent and Al Aasy, so we think he'll be more than up against it. It will be fascinating to see how he gets on should he run, and to see how popular he is at 10-1, but for now, we're content to lay him at double figures."
This debut marks a critical moment in Constitution Hill's career, as he seeks to prove his versatility and competitiveness on the Flat Turf against elite opposition, despite the skeptical outlook from the betting industry.
