Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has resigned following months of fan protests, with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League after the worst start to a season in the competition's history. The club confirmed on Friday that Shi will step down from his role, with Nathan Shi—no relation—taking over on an interim basis.
Wolves have managed just two points from their opening 16 games, failing to win a single match. The poor run led to the sacking of manager Vitor Pereira last month, replaced by former player Rob Edwards. Supporters had increasingly voiced their anger, notably during the recent 4-1 home defeat to Manchester United, when fans delayed entering the stadium and chanted at Shi.
Jeff Shi will remain chairman and CEO of Fosun Sports Group, which owns Wolves, but will have no further involvement in the club's operations. In a statement, he said: 'I took the keys to this chair with humility; today, I step aside with a heart full of gratitude. It has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside our leadership team, players, coaches, staff and – above all – our fans.'
Interim chairman Nathan Shi expressed his pride in taking on the role during 'an important and challenging moment', pledging to work with all stakeholders to build a stronger future. Wolves host Brentford on Saturday, and failure to win would equal Sheffield United's record of 17 games without a win from the start of the 2020-21 season.
