Liverpool have received a significant boost in their efforts to retain promising youngster Joshua Abe, after Chelsea were hit with a nine-month transfer ban on academy players. The sanction, imposed on Monday, comes as a result of previous breaches relating to secret payments and registration irregularities.
The ban effectively derails Chelsea's reported 'revenge mission' following the departure of Rio Ngumoha from Stamford Bridge to Anfield in 2024. Ngumoha's switch had prompted Chelsea to restrict Liverpool scouts from attending academy matches at their Cobham training base.
Fifteen-year-old Abe, a winger born in July 2010, has impressed for Liverpool's Under-18s this season, netting eight goals and providing three assists in ten appearances. Though yet to feature for the first team, he is regarded as one of the club's most exciting young talents. He has not yet signed a scholarship contract, attracting interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, and several other top clubs.
With Chelsea unable to recruit academy players for nine months, Liverpool's chances of keeping Abe have improved. If he stays, he may follow in the footsteps of Ngumoha, who made his Premier League debut off the bench against Newcastle United in August, scoring a goal that drew praise from manager Arne Slot.
Slot commented on Ngumoha's composure: 'He's a player that can finish really well for his age. How firm his shot was, you don't see this often for a 16-year-old. He is so confident.' The Reds will hope Abe can similarly progress through the ranks.
