Casemiro played his first MLS match for Inter Miami, starting and completing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over FC Montreal. The former Manchester United midfielder's debut, however, was overshadowed by a serious injury to new teammate German Berterame and a continuing league investigation into the transfer.
Match Details and Injury
The game was halted for 11 minutes after Berterame collided with Montreal defender Efrain Morales. An ambulance drove onto the pitch to take the striker to hospital. Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez scored the winning goal from the penalty spot.
After the match, Inter Miami's interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos said: "Thank God he’s [Berterame] recovering. He’s okay and conscious. His family has been informed of everything. We didn’t know what to do. It was a very desperate situation."
Transfer Investigation
The 34-year-old Brazilian announced his intention to leave Manchester United at the start of the year, with his contract expiring in the summer. After playing his final match for the Reds against Nottingham Forest in May, Casemiro participated in the World Cup, where Brazil lost to Norway in the round of 16.
Following a short break, he agreed a one-year deal with David Beckham's Inter Miami, with an option to extend until 2029. Shortly after the transfer was announced, the MLS confirmed they were investigating the move due to 'tampering allegations' regarding 'discovery rights'.
LA Galaxy held the discovery rights for Casemiro. Inter Miami confirmed they had reached a settlement to obtain those rights. The league stated: "The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete."
Casemiro is expected to make his home debut for Inter Miami next weekend against Columbus.
