Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has stressed the importance of avoiding emotional extremes within his squad following a mixed run of results under his leadership. The Red Devils enjoyed a perfect start with four consecutive victories after Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim last month, but their momentum was checked by a 1-1 draw away at West Ham United on February 10.
Balanced Approach Key to United's Progress
Carrick believes his players have maintained a level-headed perspective throughout this period, refusing to get carried away by early successes or overly discouraged by setbacks. Speaking ahead of Monday's Premier League fixture against Everton, he highlighted the need for consistency in attitude.
"We've got to be a bit balanced in terms of not getting carried away before that West Ham game in terms of winning games, and certainly not getting carried away if we don't come away with the three points," Carrick explained. "There's an understanding that games are tough to win in this league, and it's proven, not just for us."
Analyzing the West Ham Draw
The manager pointed to several positive aspects from the London Stadium encounter, despite United failing to secure a fifth straight win. "A lot of the performance in terms of the control and how we went about the game was there, there were a lot of good things in the game," he noted.
Carrick acknowledged the match became more open as United pushed for a winner late on, but emphasized the significance of scoring a late equalizer. "It probably got open towards the end when we were chasing it a little bit more, but we looked dangerous. And scoring a late goal is a big positive, so I think it's an important point for us," he said.
Everton Challenge Awaits at Hill Dickinson Stadium
United currently occupy fourth position in the Premier League table as they prepare to face Everton, managed by Carrick's former Manchester United boss David Moyes. The Toffees present a formidable obstacle according to Carrick.
"David's teams are hard to play against, he's such a good manager, and with the experience he's got, he knows what it takes to have success in this league," Carrick stated. "It's one where we've had a lot of time to look forward to it. Going away to Everton, I know it's a new stadium but historically it's always been tough."
He specifically mentioned the challenging atmosphere Everton supporters create, recalling from his playing days that "it's always been one of the toughest ones when I've played away from home." Carrick added that his team must "try to be our best where we can" while acknowledging areas for improvement.
Mount Nearing Return to Action
In team news, Carrick revealed that midfielder Mason Mount is approaching a return to fitness after missing action since the Manchester derby in mid-January. His potential availability could provide a welcome boost as United seek to maintain their top-four position.
Carrick concluded by emphasizing the foundation his team has built: "We've got things to improve on, but we've got a good base and a good foundation moving forward, good spirit. So we'll have to draw on pretty much all of that." The match against Everton represents another critical test of United's resilience under their interim manager's guidance.
