The Sky Sports pundit made the pointed remark during Monday Night Football's coverage of West Ham United's clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Ashton's Goal Sparks Fiery Exchange
The controversy erupted during the pre-match build-up when Sky Sports showed footage of former West Ham striker Dean Ashton scoring an overhead kick against Manchester United. The clip was used to analyse James Justin's recent goal for Leeds United against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ashton's 2006 strike saw him position himself goalside of Ferdinand at Old Trafford before shrugging off the defender's physical attention to score. Watching the footage in the studio, Ashton himself exclaimed: "Get off, Rio."
