Carragher Warns Liverpool's Next Manager of Challenges

Jamie Carragher has raised concerns about the challenges awaiting Liverpool's next head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot. The former defender believes blame should be shared across the club's hierarchy and playing squad after a disappointing Premier League title defence.

Surprise Timing of Slot's Sacking

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher admitted he was taken aback by the timing of Slot's departure, which came less than a week after the season ended. Despite guiding Liverpool to Champions League qualification on the final day, the Dutchman was sacked after a poor title defence that saw 20 defeats in all competitions. Carragher noted that Slot had been close to appointing a coach, suggesting the club had not previously signalled an imminent change.

Andoni Iraola Emerges as Leading Candidate

Andoni Iraola, set to leave Bournemouth when his contract expires next month, has become the frontrunner to become Liverpool's 23rd permanent manager. Carragher praised Iraola's work at Bournemouth, where he led the club to European qualification for the first time with an attacking style. However, he stopped short of fully endorsing the Spaniard, questioning whether his high-intensity methods could be sustained during a gruelling fixture schedule.

"He's done a brilliant job. There are still huge question marks. The football is something Liverpool want to get to, high intense football, but it's not all about that when you're Liverpool manager," Carragher said. "My worry is can you play at that intensity when you're playing every three days?"

Mohamed Salah's Public Criticism

Slot's final months were overshadowed by Mohamed Salah's public criticism of the head coach. The Egyptian cut short a lucrative two-year deal and said an emotional goodbye to Liverpool supporters after nine years, warning of declining standards. Carragher condemned Salah's behaviour, stating it undermined the manager and contributed to a toxic dressing room atmosphere.

"There is no doubt that he lost supporters. I don't ever want Liverpool Football Club to have player power to speak out about a manager who won the Premier League," Carragher said. "What manager does it help when a star player comes out publicly criticising the manager? That shouldn't happen no matter the situation."

Expectations for the New Manager

Carragher emphasised that Liverpool's next manager will be expected to win the league title, noting that the club previously had a manager who achieved that. He warned that the new boss must address dressing room issues and improve performances, especially with the ball against low blocks.

"Whoever comes in is a risk, but Liverpool did have a manager who won the league. The new man coming in will have to sort that dressing room out," he added.
