Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Højlund struck late to secure a vital 4-2 victory for Manchester United against Sheffield United at Old Trafford. The win ends a six-week drought without a Premier League victory, though Erik ten Hag's side once again made hard work of it, falling behind twice before mounting a comeback.
Sheffield United took the lead in the first half when a wayward pass from André Onana gifted Jayden Bogle a simple finish. Harry Maguire levelled with a deft header, but Ben Brereton Díaz restored the visitors' advantage early in the second half. United equalised again through a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Auston Trusty was adjudged to have fouled Maguire.
With 81 minutes gone, Fernandes collected a Kobbie Mainoo pass and fired a superb left-footed strike past Wes Foderingham. Højlund then added a fourth in stoppage time, his first goal since 18 February, to seal the points in front of new technical director Jason Wilcox.
Ten Hag acknowledged both positives and negatives. 'Many positives, including the resilience to fight back after losing two times. But also there were negatives. We gave it away [goals], it can't happen, unacceptable,' he said. 'We were very composed. I'm happy with the win and we need to move on.'
The result leaves Sheffield United bottom of the table, needing a win against Newcastle on Saturday to avoid relegation. Manager Chris Wilder lamented his side's defensive fragility: 'The ball goes in the back of our net too easy.'
